Gossip Girl Clothes: How to Dress Like Your Favorite Character
If you’re in your late teens to early 20’s, you’ve probably worn a thing or two inspired by Gossip Girl clothes. One of the most watched and influential TV shows on the planet, Gossip Girl was the show to watch – not just for its story line but for the very clothes that the characters wore on the streets of New York. A show about an elite upper class clique of New York’s Upper East Side, Gossip Girl influenced many stylish girls and boys, as well as designers and clothing labels.
Costume designer Eric Daman, who worked on Sex and the City, created extravagant wardrobes for the characters, helping the actors get into their personas on screen. You’d see a lot of designer labels such as Valentino, Gucci, Prada, McQueen, Jenny Packham, Bottega Venetta, and many high fashion labels adorned on the backs of the main characters Serena Van Der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf, along with the rest of the cast.
If you want to look like your favorite Gossip Girl characters Serena and Blair, here are a few ways to dress like the characters without breaking your bank:
Serena Van Der Woodsen
Serena was the show’s quintessential “It Girl” – the epitome of youth of the Upper East Side. Her style was inspired by Kate Moss – chic, boho, but mixed with elements of classic chic. Mixing a lot of vintage pieces and fashion-forward clothes, Serena also had a tinge of rocker chic to her style.
Stock up on well-fitted jackets – long, cropped, leather, wool, tweed – as long as they fit your body, add them to any outfit, add a scarf, and pretend like you’re walking along Manhattan for that ultimate Serena look. Pair the jacket with skinny jeans and boots – Serena always wore boots. If you must wear a dress, wear mini dresses that highlight your body. Tops with studs, sequins, and patterns are also recommended. And always wear your hair wavy, thick, and long.
Blair brought back the headband to mainstream fashion. During the first 2 seasons of Gossip Girl, you hardly saw Blair without her signature head accessory. In the college years, you saw the headband replaced with the hat, but the former was brought back again in the later seasons. Blair perfectly fit the stereotype of the Upper East Side woman – classic, preppy, and definitely polished.
Blair never wore pants – so don’t wear them. Instead, wear skirts or dresses. If it’s cold, wear opaque tights with them. Stock up on tailored pieces, as well – something that can bring you from college interview to a formal lunch. Use pieces with feminine details such as bows, ruffles, and lace for that royalty factor – as Blair was once a princess – for an hour or two. And when at home, never get caught seen in flannel pajamas. Blair loved dressed up loungewear – as often seen in scenes where Chuck would visit her at her flat. Blair always looked put together – even when sleeping, so stock up on fancy negligee to feel like the ultimate Blair Waldorf.
